Osteoporosis: what are the risk factors?
The main victims of osteoporosis are, you know, postmenopausal women. However, many other hormonal factors are taken into account in developing this bone disease.
Menopause and osteoporosis
The strength of our bones, that is to say, our risk of developing osteoporosis is influenced by a variety of factors, including hormonal factors. Thus, it is known that estrogen, present in large quantities in women, play an essential role in bone formation. However, at menopause, estrogen levels in the blood drop sharply, which causes brittle bones much more important. It is well known that up to 40% of postmenopausal women will one day or another suffered a fracture related to osteoporosis.
Heredity and osteoporosis
Other risk factors for osteoporosis, however, come into play. Thus, genetics plays a central role in the strength of the skeleton. The presence of osteoporosis in the family should encourage vigilance, as being small and thin ... which is also a risk factor.
