Menopause

The hormonal changes disturb the blood lipid

Sweats, hot flashes, anxiety, irregular cycles ... and if it menopause? It is also a time to measure your cholesterol and to watch carefully.
Indeed, after a certain age, the hormones can protect you more ladies, and your cardiovascular risk tends to gradually reach the men, even to exceed ...

But what is the relationship between the hormones estrogen and cholesterol? Estrogens tend to increase HDL-cholesterol or "good cholesterol" (as opposed to bad cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol says), which exerts a protective effect. But when estrogen production decreases at menopause, the regulation of blood lipids is disrupted, increasing cardiovascular risk. Other contributing factors, such as advanced age and a redistribution of body fat: so far, located in the lower part of body fat tend to concentrate in the upper part, especially the belly.
Monitoring of hormone replacement therapy in menopause is not enough to significantly reduce cholesterol. It is therefore important, from menopause, monitor your cholesterol levels.

It is based on a simple blood sample, from which we proceed to a lipid. If cholesterol is good, it must conduct an annual audit. If too high, your doctor will recommend simple dietary measures, or a cholesterol-lowering diet if necessary.
Note that cholesterol progressively increases in women until age 65 then decreases. It reaches a peak between 48 and 56 years. It is therefore advisable to first point on his cardiovascular risk at 50 years.

In general, higher cholesterol levels can be controlled through regular physical activity sufficient, combined with a balanced diet. So why wait until it is too high to adopt a healthy lifestyle?
